Everything You Should know About The Big 5 Publishers

Everything You Should know About The Big 5 Publishers When you hear someone referring to The Big 5 in publishing, theyre referring to the top five trade book publishing companies in the United States. They were formerly known as The Big 6 but in 2013, Random House and Penguin merged. Now, The Big 5 are Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Hachette Book Group, and Simon Schuster. While getting published by one of these top publishers is a dream for most authors, none of them accept unsolicited manuscripts, which are manuscripts that are submitted directly from authors and dont go through a literary agent. However, some of these publishers have smaller imprints that do accept unsolicited manuscripts from unrepresented authors, so its not a waste of time for new and indie authors to look into these major players in the industry. While getting published by one of these top publishers is a dream for most authors, none of them accept unsolicited manuscripts, which are manuscripts that are submitted directly from authors and dont go through a literary agent. However, its still possible to get the attention of The Big Five if you follow the rules. Here are a few suggestions offered by Balancecareers.com.Have a platformAccording to the website:Your platform might be an established history of literary publications and prizes or a popular blog. It might even be a web series with a strong audience or a Twitter feed with 100,000 followers. In any case, a publisher will look to you to help bring an audience to your work. Its a rare author these days who stumbles upon a publishing contract armed with nothing but a great manuscript.Even if the book is still just a gleam in your eye, you can start building an author platform.Balancecareers.comWrite a great manuscriptObviously, this is a given. Without a great manuscript, you wont stand a chance of getting your foot in the door.Find an agentAs mentioned in each of the profiles of The Big 5 publishers below, unsolicited manuscripts are not accepted, except for some exclusions on certain smaller imprints. According to the website:Literary agents are the gatekeepers for book editors. They pre-screen the gazillions of manuscripts and book proposals that are produced every year, winnowing them down to the few most likely to succeed, and pitching them directly to publishers. A credentialed literary agent can be a powerful advocate for your book. These days, there are opportunities to directly catch the attention of print editors. The digital-first imprints of major publishers are prime examples. But most of the time an agent is essential to getting a contract with a major publisher.Balancecareers.comNow, lets take a look at each of The Big 5 and some of the recent titles theyve released.Penguin Random HousePengui n Random House (PRH) was formed in 2013 with the merger of Random House and Penguin Group. Rogerian Argument Against Pro-Choice - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 698 Downloads: 1 Date added: 2019/02/20 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Rogerian Argument Essay Did you like this example? In January 1973, the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade declared it the woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy. This was the case that legalized abortions worldwide. Abortion is a highly controversial topic and many people have different opinions on it. Pro-lifers think it’s morally wrong to kill an innocent child, while pro-choicers think it’s the woman’s decision. This topic has been debated for many years now and hopefully a consensus can finally be reached. There are many pro-choice views on abortion. Primarily, it’s believed that it’s all in the power of the woman because it’s their body. They have the decision to keep the baby or to abort it. Rape is also a big factor to consider. It isn’t the woman’s fault if she was taken advantage of and raped. I agree that it is cruel to force a woman to carry a pregnancy that was from the result of a rape. Therefore, she should have the right to an abortion. Also, more and more teenagers are getting pregnant at young ages. Teenage pregnancy may be dangerous to the mother and the baby. Moreover, abortion procedures are safe and don’t cause lasting health issue. Abortions are termination of a pregnancy, not of the baby. A person’s age isn’t calculated at conception, it’s calculated from their birth date. Therefore, life doesn’t begin until after birth so it isn’t considered to be murder. Lastly, there are families who are financially unstable and can’t provide for a child. The baby won’t get everything it needs and the baby could suffer. Overall, I understand that there are many reasons why abortions should be allowed. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Rogerian Argument: Against Pro-Choice" essay for you Create order The primary concern for both pro-choicers and pro-lifers is safety. This could include a safe abortion or the overall health and safety of the mother. Also, both sides could most likely agree that abortions should be allowed if a woman is raped. It isn’t the mother’s fault if she is raped and shouldn’t have to keep the baby. Also, the high use of contraceptives could be agreed as a good way to avoid pregnancy. However, I believe that abortions are immoral and wrong. Abortion is murder and it’s killing an innocent child, even if that child has yet to be born. Life begins at conception, so therefore babies have a right to life. Also, fetuses feel pain during the abortion process. During the eighth week of the first trimester, babies are beginning to develop the spinal reflex which is the most primitive response to pain (Ertelt, 1). Women should not be able to use abortion as a way of contraception. There are so many other forms of effective contraceptives that don’t involve killing the baby. If a woman becomes pregnant, she should accept the responsibility that comes with producing a child. Parents should take responsibility for their actions and accept the consequences. The unborn baby shouldn’t be punished for their mistake. When having sexual intercourse, the chance of pregnancy is always possible. However, precautions measure should be taken to lower the risk. If a w oman isn’t ready for a child, the choice of adoption is always available. There are tons of people who would be more than grateful to adopt a child. Overall, there are many reasons why abortions are morally wrong. In conclusion, a consensus on abortions needs to be reached. I understand the reasons why pro-choicers think it’s okay, but I still think it’s immoral and wrong. However, I could agree and say that it’s acceptable only in certain cases. Babies start developing as early as a few weeks after conception. Therefore I think abortions could be okay as long as they’re done before the 4th or 5th week so it doesn’t harm the baby. Also, they could be acceptable in extreme cases like rape. I don’t think it’s fair for a women to feel obligated to carry a pregnancy if she was raped. Most importantly, each family has different circumstances and the best decision should be made in regards to the baby.

Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legal in Vietnam free essay sample

Currently, same-sex marriage is not legal in Vietnam, nor is any other forms of same-sex union recognized. In the late 2010, a wedding ceremony video of two women in Vietnam was posted on the Internet, causing a stir in the online community and the public. This is the first same-sex wedding ever organized publicly in Vietnam. Some people show positive attitude towards this event, saying it was â€Å"a good sign for an opener society† (Hoang, 2011) as well as a move forward to the legal recognition of same-sex marriage in the nation. Others think that it is just an example of youngster’s â€Å"ebullience† and â€Å"imitation† (Hoang, 2011), believing that this type of marriage should not be lawfully supported by the authorities. For me, personally, I strongly approved of same-sex marriage to be legal in Vietnam for three main reasons. First of all, homosexuality is not an infectious disease and it has nothing to do with physical or mental illness. We will write a custom essay sample on Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legal in Vietnam or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Homosexuality is the matter of nature, which is related to sexual orientation, â€Å"a term frequently used to describe a person’s romantic, emotional or sexual attraction to another person†. Therefore, people whose sexual orientation is homosexual or gay should be treated like everyone else, instead of being discriminated as sick persons by their fellow-creatures. Secondly, to legalize same-sex marriage also means a big movement on the path to civil rights. Since we have made it clear that gay and lesbian is no different from other people, except for their sexual orientation, and should be treated as real human beings, we must admit their rights as human beings, too. According to Olson (2010), when we refuse their attempt of happiness pursuing, â€Å"we demean their relationships and we demean them as individuals. As a result, a society that does not approved of human rights is undoubtedly a society with no justice. Lastly, conservative people might think that long-standing conception of Vietnam in particular and Oriental culture in general is marriage to have children to maintain race, so legalizing same-sex marriage would be contrary to this traditional concept. In fact, homosexual people are as much responsible as everyone else. Therefore, when they decide to marry, they have already thought of a long-lasting family with spouses and children. Moreover, thanks to the development of medicine, homosexual ouples can now have their own children; or they can helpfully adopt orphaned children, which could also be highly social benefits. About the social concept, I think it will gradually change because â€Å"any conception must serve people’s happiness† (Khuat, 2011). To conclude, gays and lesbians are part of our society, and we cannot deny their presence and their pursuit of happiness. I think it’s time for Vietnamese authorities to think of an actual legislation for same-sex marriage to catch up with social development.

Testing Employees for Drugs essays

Testing Employees for Drugs essays Testing employees for the use of drugs, regardless of the occupation, has been a controversial issue for years. Obviously, those who use drugs, including those not considered hard drugs such as marijuana, feel that it is a violation of their right to privacy. And they are right! However, that is only viewing this issue from a deontological perspective. The utilitarian perspective offers quite a different view. From this perspective, drug testing the employees of a company is the solution that is for the greater good for the greatest number of people for the longest amount of time. Imagine if drug testing did nor exist. Chances are that eventually an incident such as an airplane pilot overdosing on drugs would occur, producing devastating results. Therefore, there are certain occupations that are required to undergo mandatory drug testing. The drug testing of millions of transportation workers-largely bus and truck drivers, airline flight crews and mechanics, and a variety of r ailroad workers-is required by the government in the name of public safety. Its easy to see why employers are concerned about their employees using drugs. Compared with the overage employee, recreational drug users are more than two times more likely to be late for work, almost four times more likely to injure themselves or others in the workplace, and five times more likely to file a workers compensation claim. For the small price of a drug test employees can gain much more security and have that added insurance that they will be able to operate a safer and more efficient workplace As the articles continues to state, drug testing is not as simple as it may appear. Employers are not able to just send their employees down the street to the local testing facility for drug tests. For example, Connecticut has many rules and regulations regarding drug testing. Many of these regulations exist due to the in...

Why Adding Salt to Water Increases the Boiling Point

Why Adding Salt to Water Increases the Boiling Point If you add salt to water, you increase its boiling point. The temperature will increase about a one-half degree Celsius for every 58 grams of dissolved salt  per kilogram of water.  This is an example of boiling point elevation. The property isnt exclusive to water. It occurs any time you add a non-volatile solute (such as salt) to a solvent (e.g. water). But How Does It Work? Water boils when the molecules are able to overcome the vapor pressure of the surrounding air to move from the liquid phase to the gas phase. A few different processes occur when you add a solute that increases the amount of energy (heat) needed for water to make the transition. When you add salt to water, sodium chloride dissociates into sodium and chlorine ions. These charged particles alter the intermolecular forces between water molecules. In addition to affecting the hydrogen bonding between water molecules, there is an ion-dipole interaction to consider. Every water molecule is a dipole, which means one side (the oxygen side) is more negative and the other side (the hydrogen side) is more positive. The positively-charged sodium ions align with the oxygen side of a water molecule, while the negatively charged chlorine ions align with the hydrogen side of a water molecule. The ion-dipole interaction is stronger than the hydrogen bonding between the water molecules, so more energy is needed to move water away from the ions and into the vapor phase. Even without a charged solute, adding particles to water raises the boiling point because part of the pressure the solution exerts on the atmosphere now comes from solute particles, not just solvent (water) molecules. The water molecules need more energy to produce enough pressure to escape the boundary of the liquid. The more salt (or any solute) added to water, the more you raise the boiling point. The phenomenon depends on the number of particles formed in the solution. Freezing point depression is another colligative property that works the same way, so if you add salt to water you lower its freezing point as well as raise its boiling point. The Boiling Point of NaCl When you dissolve salt in water, it breaks into sodium and chloride ions. If you boiled all the water off, the ions would recombine to form solid salt. However, there is no danger of boiling the NaCl. The boiling point of sodium chloride is 2575 degrees F or 1413 degrees C. Salt, like other ionic solids, has an extremely high boiling point.
